Italian Sausage is a classic for a reason. It’s so incredibly versatile! Here at Papa Cantella’s, we use Italian Sausage more often than probably any other blend, partly because of our Italian roots and mostly because it’s so delicious!
Our Premium Italian Sausage comes in several varieties. Our Mild Italian – the recipe upon which we were founded - is seasoned with our own handmade-blend of natural spices. We also offer Sweet Italian, a blend for those looking for just a touch of sweetness. And for those who look for some kick – our Hot Italian includes all the same Italian seasonings with the added punch of crushed red pepper plus a hint of garlic. So, what are we serving with our Italian Sausage this summer? Here are three of our favorite sides for our most-requested sausage blend.
- Peppers & Onions
There’s a reason the combination of “sausage with peppers & onions” is so popular! The sweetness of cooked peppers and onions perfectly complements the flavors of Italian Sausage, particularly if you like hot sausage. We love to use multiple colors of bell peppers for visual interest and the sweetest onions we can find. Be sure to season all your veggies liberally with salt and pepper during the cooking process. You can, of course, stuff your sausage and peppers into a toasted hoagie bun, but we like to eat ours with a knife and fork, and sometimes over saffron rice or smooth polenta.
- Parmesan Pasta
The beauty of Italian Sausage is that it has many of Italy’s classic flavors blended right in. Oregano, basil, parsley…these tastes bring us back to the Old Country and no side ties it all together like a bowl of beautifully buttered, Parmesan-sprinkled pasta. Short noodles with a little shape (rigatoni, corkscrew, penne) generally do a great job of holding onto the cheese and butter. When we want to really take the meal to the next level we add some delicious red sauce and sometimes chop the sausage right in.
- Tangy Lentils
A good rule of thumb when pairing sides with sausage is to remember that sausage is generally very savory and rich. Any side dish that breaks up that flavor profile will pair wonderfully with Italian Sausage (and any kind of sausage, really!) which is why we love lentils with vinegar. Lentils are as easy to cook as rice and you can always throw in some chopped vegetables such as carrots and onions for extra flavor. What really cranks up the taste is the dash of balsamic or red wine vinegar we sprinkle over our well-seasoned lentils before serving with our sausage.
What’s your favorite side dish to serve with Italian Sausage? There’s something comforting about the classics, but we love experimenting with new flavors and textures at home.
