Sausage isn’t just for grilling out. In fact, breakfast is one of our favorite ways to eat sausage here at Papa Cantella’s! There’s nothing better than a hearty plate of scrambled eggs, home fries, and breakfast sausage links on a Saturday morning. These days, though, we’re thinking outside the breakfast box.
Here are three new ways to eat sausage at breakfast:
- Sausage & Egg Casseroles: Endlessly Versatile
Breakfast casseroles are a classic! They save well for days in the fridge which means they’re ideal for feeding a family or guests. Sausage is the perfect breakfast casserole component because its rich flavor compliments the lightness of eggs. There’s no end to the combinations you can come up with for delicious breakfast egg casseroles. A few we’ve been enjoying recently include:
- Kale, spicy sausage, Gruyere, and sourdough cubes
- Mushroom, tomato, zucchini, cheese, and sausage
- Sausage, onion, bell pepper, sweet potato, and swiss
- Biscuits and Gravy: Southern Staple
If you grew up in the south you’ve probably had your fair share of biscuits smothered in creamy gravy with sausage chunks. Indulgent, yes, but a hearty way to stay full for hours! We really enjoying mixing things up by adding new and unusual ingredients to our gravy or using unexpected sausage blends. For example, no one expects “English Bangers” in their sausage gravy but they’ll be pleasantly surprised! Consider adding unusual ingredients like hot sauce or sage to your gravy with traditional breakfast sausage to liven things up.
- Sausage Pancakes: Sweet Twist
Few things compliment the richness of breakfast sausage like sweetness. (It’s the same reason our Chicken Apple Sausage works so well – savory chicken paired with sweet, tangy apple!) Instead of serving our pancakes alongside link sausage, we’re chopping it up and adding it right to the batter instead. You can use any flavor sausage you like, link or crumbled, but make sure it’s cooked beforehand since it won’t get a ton of time on the heat. Griddle your pancakes like you normally would then top with real maple syrup for a decadent treat. The kids will love it, too!
As they say, breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Sausage helps us create sustaining breakfast recipes everyone will enjoy, and we can always find ways to use up leftovers if our tummies get full too quickly at breakfast time.
