Everyone’s had a brat off the grill or a delicious plate of sausage and spaghetti. But sausage is so versatile, there are literally hundreds of ways to cook it that you probably haven’t considered! Here are four of the most unexpected ways we’ve enjoyed delicious Papa Cantella’s sausage.
- In the Slow-Cooker
The slow-cooker is our go-to for busy weeknights. Sausage has so much moisture built right in, it only gets better with time! Our favorite ways to use it in the crock pot include crumbled into in a slow-stewed tomato sauce for serving over pasta (Sweet Italian) or cooked whole with potatoes, carrots, and onions a one-pot meal (Bratwurst).
- As Meatballs
Sausage has a lot of flavor and nothing concentrates that flavor more efficiently than the shape of a meatball! We’re so sure sausage meatballs should be on everyone’s menu that we make them (Italian Sausage Meatballs) ready-to-use in your favorite sauce. You can also make your own using your favorite blend of fresh sausage combined with grated onion and a sprinkling of breadcrumbs. Simmer slowly for the best taste!
- Baked Links
Did you know you can bake your sausages directly in the oven? We use this technique a lot when it’s too cold or rainy to grill, and it works beautifully with everything from Chicken Apple Sausages to our Big Mild Italian. We like to cook ours in a large cast iron pan or directly on a rimmed baking sheet under medium heat until they reach 160 degrees.
- In Soup
Sausage and soup are a match made in heaven! We like to incorporate it crumbled into classic soups like Minestrone (Roasted Chicken with Peppers & Onions) or Hearty Lentil (Hot Turkey Italian). We usually cook off the sausage first then sauté all the other vegetables in the drippings for an added level of depth. The best part? Soup with sausage only gets better as it sits so we always make extra for leftovers!
Sausage is a great character actor: it can easily play a supporting role to other ingredients in a dish, or it can be the standout star itself! Its versatility is what keeps us coming up with so many delicious hand-blended seasonings and flavor combinations like we’ve been doing since 1980.
